Is This the Best Bolivar Cigar Ever Made?
Bolivar cigars, one of the most famous Cuban brands, were first introduced in 1901 by Jose F. Rocha but officially registered in Havana in 1921. Named after the legendary South American revolutionary Simon Bolivar, who liberated countries like Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia, these cigars have a rich history. After Rocha’s death, Cifuentes y Cia took over, moving production to the iconic Partagas Factory in Havana.
Known for their strength and full-bodied flavor, Bolivar cigars are a favorite among seasoned smokers, boasting perfect construction and consistency. Until Altadis acquired a controlling share in Habanos SA, Bolivar produced a range of hand-made and machine-made cigars using Vuelta Abajo tobacco. Afterward, they decided Cuban brands should focus on either hand-made or machine-made cigars, with Bolivar sticking to the hand-made tradition.
The Bolivar wrapper is smooth and beautifully constructed. After lighting up and enjoying the first 10 minutes, the flavor profile truly comes to life. The smoke is creamy and rich, offering a complex blend of flavors. You’ll find dark salted caramel, espresso, cocoa, hazelnut, anise (a Cuban tobacco staple), and a hint of spice. It's a delightful mix, even if you don’t pick out each note individually, you'll appreciate how harmoniously they blend.
For me, the flavor profile remains relatively consistent throughout the smoke. Rather than the flavors coming and going, they stay balanced, with a slight intensification toward the end.
Despite its reputation, the Bolivar Belicosos isn’t as strong as I expected in terms of nicotine. It’s a full-flavored and full-bodied cigar, but it’s also incredibly smooth, making it a pleasant experience without being overwhelming. Bolivar remains one of my favorite Cuban brands, always delivering satisfaction.
